This is the first post in our Parent Hacks series, that aim to make your life as a parent easier. Here we offer 5 clever tips and tricks for helping children get to sleep in the heat.
Help Children Sleep in Hot Weather
Use thin cotton bed sheets
When temperatures are at their highest, a thin cotton sheet acts as a perfect cover. If possible having a complete cotten bedding set will ensure the most comfortable sleep on warm nights.
Get a quiet electric fan
This is a simple tip, but probably the most effective for reducing body temperature. Choosing a quiet fan for children is recommended. For an optimal cooling effect, position the fan so it oscilates, fanning air across the body. As an added bonus fans are more effective at keeping mosquitos away than insect repellents. Check out some great value fans here.
Keep the curtains closed and windows open during the daytime
This tactic for cooling your house comes recommended by Philip Eden, a weather expert. To maximise this trick, keep the windows open on the shady side of the house and closed on the sunny side.
Make sure children stay hydrated
Giving children a glass of water before bed will keep them hydrated throughout the night. Altenatively put a glass next to their bed for them to sip on, nothing disrupts sleep like waking up with a dry mouth and having to fetch a glass of water. If you add lots of ice to the glass of water it will stay cool for longer too!
Put a towel over pillows
The cool side of the pillow feeling is short lived in hot weather. One way to combat children sleeping with a sweaty head is to put a towel over the top of the pillow. This will absorb sweat from the childs head giving greater comfort.
