Wearable tech is not just for adults. Toy manufacturers are lining up to join the latest craze of things that aren’t a phone but do most of what a phone does. VTech, the makers of tablets for children released their Kidizoom Smart Watch and it is proving to be a hit with youngsters, but what is it? And does you child need one?
Vtech, known for learning focussed tablets and brightly coloured cameras give children a taste of technology in a bump proof package. When they announced that they would be the first company to make a Smart Watch for children reviewers queued up to firstly ask why? And second see how smart it really could be…
Although it is referred to as a Smart Watch, the Kidizoom is an extension of VTech’s photography range. Its main feature is a low quality camera which takes snaps and records video, you can then easily download these to a computer via mini-USB cable (which also acts as the charger).
In addition to the camera, the friendly interface gives children the option to play games (downloadable from VTechs app store), check the time and record their voice. There are a variety of clock faces available and for younger children this can be a fun way to learn to tell the time.
As you probably noticeded, there’s no phone option. As the watch is aimed at children age 4 – 11 this is the right decision. It’s a fun bit of kit for kids to play on, take pictures and hopefully learn something. Also at £39.99 it seems a reasonable price for a Christmas present.V
The downside of the watch is its battery life, although if vigilant with charging this shouldn’t be a problem, just be aware that it might not last all day with constant use. We’re looking forward to seeing who’s next to bring out wearable kiddie tech as the market is wide open. It looks like VTech have the right approach with this Smart Watch, it lets children have a bit of fun for a reasonable price.
